The Tasmanian Rural Community Young Leaders Academy was a partnership between Rural Alive and Well Inc, RDS Partners and WHK Tasmania, supported by funding from the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, under its Australia’s Farming Future program.
The need for a leadership development program for young people from regional and rural communities in Tasmania was recognised through discussions with RDS Partners and industry colleagues. The term leadership was broadened to encompass a range of situations from introducing new enterprise to a family farm or working towards heading up peak industry groups.
RDS Partners developed and facilitated a leadership program across two live-in weekends. The course provided participants with the opportunity to develop an understanding of leadership styles, analyse their own leadership style and how people respond to different drivers.
The participants were then supported by out of session mentoring provided by RDS Partners.
Participants unanimously rated this course as one of the most useful and important in their efforts to develop their own leadership pathways.
